We all want that beautiful glowing skin and we know that what we take into our bodies factors a lot into how our skin looks. Drinking lots of clean water, eating your fruits and veggies, regular exercise, and making sure you are taking a whole food based multi-vitamin and mineral a day helps A TON towards having great skin.
But what about skin care products? Do these really work? Yes and No.
Skin Care Products That Don’t Work
The market is flooded with products that don’t work. They hire models and good looking people such as celebrities to advertise a product the model or celebrity probably doesn’t even use themselves.
If it’s cheap – it’s probably not good. You pay for what you get. But then again, if it’s expensive, you could just be paying for an overpriced luxury lotion. Even these products that say they contain ingredients that reduce wrinkles etc., you will find actually contain a minimal amount of that ingredient (found towards the end of the list of ingredients) and then a bunch of other preservatives including cancer causing Parabens and Phthalates (according to breastcancer.org) including mineral oil. Check out this blog on 3 Key Reasons to Avoid Mineral Oil.
Who actually wants these harmful ingredients on their skin? Not me.
What You Need to Know about Lotions
Let’s learn some things about lotions. Lotions that seem to absorb quickly into the skin are actually just more water soluble. They contain more water than anything else hence being absorbed quicker. Products that lie on the skin and absorb slowly have less water in them hence they take longer to absorb.
A lot of lotions on the market are mostly water based, but because they also contain oils (usually cheap mineral oil), it needs a binder and most companies use wax. This wax can actually clog up your pores and lead to breakouts. This wax even prevents any of the good ingredients in a lotion to penetrate the skin making it useless.
So how long does it take for your skin to absorb lotion? It takes your skin roughly about 30 minutes for it to absorb most lotions and roughly 25 seconds for oils..
Are suntan lotions safe? Suntan lotions serve a very different purpose than most lotions and that is to block out the sun’s supposedly harmful radiation. I don’t believe the sun is harmful at all. Sun exposure protects you from infection. It strengthens your immune system, fights cancer, and provides you with Vitamin D3, a necessary nutrient your body needs.
Sun burns and skin cancer are actually a result of nutrient deficiencies within the body and can be completely avoided by taking these nutrients or incorporating them into your diet. Several articles backing me up include: “The Deficiency that’s Making You Suffer a Sunburn” , “Prevent Sunburn with 6 Supplements“, and “The Surprising Cause of Melanoma (And No, It’s Not Too Much Sun).“
A new study also shows that most suntan lotions are contributing to skin cancer than the sun itself. Scary I know, which is why I’m picky about my suntan lotions if I use one. Dr. Mercola has written a blog about this new study that was done. Click Here to access this article. You should also know that suntan lotions out there that absorb quickly do NOTHING for your skin. They are not effective in the slightest at combatting radiation from the sun. You need to be wearing a suntan lotion that lays on top of the skin for a good sun block.
What Makes A Good Lotion?
What makes a good lotion is what is in it. The natural herbal and botanical ingredients and oils. In fact, ingredients like retinol and CoQ10 are actually found in plants. That’s why consuming these plants actually offers a higher reward in terms of skin care.
Retinol is found in high beta-carotene plants such as carrots, kale, spinach, tomatoes, bell peppers, melons and herbs such as rosehips and parsley.
CoQ10 can be found in many veggies including broccoli, brussel sprouts, spinach, legumes, and cauliflower – to name a few.
Big lotion companies take these ingredients, toss them with a chemical mixture and sell it to you as an age-fighting cream or wrinkle reducer. Do you ever wonder why these don’t work? Because if they did, they’d be flying off the shelf!
These do not have enough of the age-fighting, radical and wrinkle fighting, antioxidant ingredients it needs for it to be effective. And also because these ingredients are best absorbed orally. It might even seem like your lotion is working because of the water in the lotion adds a little bit of moisture to the skin, but you’ll soon find you need to keep reapplying because your skin is still dry. But this is how they keep getting you to buy the product over and over, meanwhile you’re thinking you’re doing something for your skin when you are just throwing your money away. If you’re a woman, we’ve all been there.
You’ll be surprised to know as well that most lotions have invalid scientific claims. There’s no such thing as “hypoallergenic” because there’s no government standard for making such a claim.
Oils are Far Better than Lotions in Skin Care and Here’s Why:
- They are pure
- pure means that oils don’t need a binder or preservatives and if you find an oil with such ingredients, don’t buy it – completely unnecessary
- High Nutrient, Fatty Acids, and Antioxidant levels
- these are key in reducing free radicals that cause aging and wrinkles
- 100% skin permeable
- easily absorbed within the skin and does not clog pores
- Adds moisture to the skin
- replenishes the lipid barrier on the skin to effectively prevent fine lines and wrinkles
The Best Skin Care Products
The best skin care products will contain a blend of water and oil (both permeable and moisturizing), but will also contain natural and raw, plant based ingredients with no harsh chemicals, toxins, or preservatives.
By containing raw, plant based ingredients – these products ensure that you are getting the full spectrum of benefits from the plant maximizing its potency and effectiveness.
Cultivation, processing and packaging are also essential as it contributes to the quality of the product. The best skin care products will look at all aspects of this and should be presented on that company’s website.
This is why I love OzNaturals – The Leader in Natural Skin Care – a one in its kind company.
How is OzNaturals Different than Other Lotions?
OzNaturals offers serums along with gels, moisturizers, masks, and butters. Serums are highly potent and you don’t need to use much at a time. Serums are my favorite as they seem to work better than most. They last all day so you don’t need to constantly re-apply. Just incorporate into your daily regimen and you’re good to go.
Unlike other companies, OzNatural products are a blend of water and natural oils and raw, plant based ingredients. And they only use plant based preservatives.
OzNatural products DO NOT contain:
- Synthetic fragrances
- Synthetic Colors
- Propylene glycol
- Mineral Oil
These are common ingredients found in most lotions. You won’t find any of these with OzNaturals.
OzNaturals formulates their products using a cold processing method. This cold processing method ensures that the vitamins and nutrients are not denatured and stay active, thereby retaining the potency it needs to be effective. Most lotions use heat or chemical emulsion which destroys the active ingredients in the lotion making the ingredients inactive, thereby reducing the potency and effectiveness.
OzNaturals also practices safe cultivation of their plant based ingredients to ensure no toxins or chemicals are present.
OzNaturals is conscientious about its packaging of its products. In order to keep the ingredients fresh and stable, it must not be exposed to air and light. They package their moisturizers, gels, and butters in light resistant and air-tight tube packaging. The serums are packaged in light sensitive amber glass bottles. You’ll find with most luxury lotions that you are paying for the container, not the product, as they oftentimes do not take this into consideration.
You can rest assured that you are not only getting your money’s worth, but that you are using an effective and safe product. I highly recommend OzNaturals as I use them in my daily regimen and I can attest to the fact that their products not only work, but make your skin look and feel great. I think the reviews on the site also speak for itself. 🙂

I do have a recipe for a natural, herbal face mask I think you’ll enjoy if you suffer from uneven skin tone.
Face Mask Recipe for Uneven Skin Tone:
2 TBSP Chickpea flour
1/4 tsp Turmeric
2 TBSP Organic Milk (Preferably raw if you can get it or vat pasteurized – not ultra pasteurized. Organic coconut or flax milk is good as well.)
Apply paste to the face especially in areas where the skin tone is more uneven.
Leave on for 20-30 minutes and Wash off.
