What is Slippery Elm?
Slippery Elm is the powdered form of the tree bark native to the central and eastern United States. This herb is magnificent and the best part is, it’s safe for children. I would give this to my children in their oatmeal to help with colds and sore throat when they were babies and I still use it to treat a sore throat today. This herb has many benefits as it is a natural anti-inflammatory and healer of tissues.
Benefits of Slippery Elm
- Soothes and heals the digestive tract, sore throat, and lungs
- Eases indigestion and strengthens and heals tissues
- Remedies diarrhea or constipation, heals IBS, colitis, diverticulitis
- Treats infant and adult acid reflux
- Made into a paste, it can reduce pain and inflammation on wounds, burns, boils, ulcers, and draws out poisons
- Helps with nervous and emotional tissues
- Treats colds and fevers
- Calms irritation to various tissues
Contains: Calcium, Tannins, Bioflavonoids, Starch, Vitamin E, Mucilage
Cautions: When cool, it becomes thick and harder to swallow if not made with enough liquid.
Directions: 1-3 tsp added to hot oatmeal for infants or adults.
1 tsp with 1 tsp honey to 1 cup boiling water or milk.
1/4 cup to 2 cups cold water – let stand for 30 minutes, heat mixture for 5 minutes, stirring constantly to prevent clumps, add honey and peppermint to cool the lungs, ginger root to increase circulation, rosemary leaves for antioxidant properties, or a pinch of clove or fennel to cure constipation.
Herbal Healing Balls
Equal parts Slippery Elm, Licorice Root Powder, Marshmallow Root Powder. Pile on plate and add several drops of water and work it together through fingers to form dough. Roll into pea sized balls- take 3 balls (just swallow them whole) every 15 minutes to a half hour depending on how serious the condition is. Store pre-made balls in a bag in the fridge and keep moist. These last about 1-2 weeks.
This is an Herb that helps with those undergoing Cancer Treatments and can even Treat those who have been exposed to high amounts of Radiation (such as the incident at Fukushima)
Infusion for those undergoing radiation to the throat (where the thyroid is located), lung, or digestive tract
2-3 TBSP in 16 ounces cold water for 6-8 hours, heat slowly (careful not to boil), stir constantly, strain and drink after allowing it to cool. Drink this everyday while undergoing chemotherapy which is very damaging to the body.
